Why Do I Keep Doing That?

See your relationship more clearly—and begin to recognize options you may not have realized were available to you.

You want to feel seen, loved, and respected.

But somehow, that's not what you're experiencing.

Maybe you keep having the same arguments.

Maybe you've explained what you need so many times that you don't know how else to say it.

Maybe you keep hoping something will change—and for a while, sometimes it does.

Then you find yourself right back in the same place.

Frustrated. Unheard. Unhappy with what's happening, but uncertain about what to do about it.

And somewhere along the way, you find yourself wondering:

“Why does it always turn out this way?”

You’ve probably tried to make things better.

You’ve talked about it.

You’ve asked for what you need.

You’ve explained yourself—maybe more than once—hoping this time you’ll finally be understood.

You’ve argued when talking didn’t seem to work.

Maybe frustration has built until you’ve yelled, threatened to leave, or said things you hoped would finally make the other person understand how serious you are.

You may have vented to friends, asked for advice, or even wondered whether counseling is the next step.

You haven’t necessarily been doing nothing. You may have been trying very hard to make things better.

And yet, something still isn’t working.

What if the next step isn’t trying harder to make something change?

What if you could step outside the frustration for a couple of hours and look at what’s actually happening?

What if you could see the situation more clearly before deciding what to do about it?

That’s what we’ll do in Why Do I Keep Doing That?

During our two hours together, I’ll guide you through a simple process for looking at one manageable relationship pattern in a different way.

Not to decide who’s right.

Not to assign fault or blame.

Not to diagnose yourself or the other person.

And not to tell you what you should do about your relationship.

Instead, we’ll slow things down enough to see what’s actually happening.

NOTICE

What keeps happening?

Before trying to explain why, you’ll identify a situation or relationship pattern that seems to repeat.

OBSERVE

What are we each actually doing?

You’ll slow down one relationship dynamic and look more closely at what the other person does, how you respond, and what happens next.

SEPARATE

What belongs to them? What belongs to me?

You’ll begin separating another person’s choices and behavior from your own—not to assign blame, but to recognize what is and isn’t within your control.

CHOOSE

What options might be available to me?

You’ll explore the difference between wanting someone to change, trying to control another person’s behavior, and setting a boundary for yourself.

And you’ll begin asking a different question:

“If they don’t change, what choices are available to me?”

Seeing an option doesn’t mean you have to take it.

It simply means you may have more choices than you realized.

You don’t have to make a big decision.

Sometimes becoming aware of something creates its own kind of pressure.

If I see the problem, does that mean I have to fix it?

What if I realize something I don’t want to know?

What if seeing things differently means I have to make a decision I’m not ready to make?

That’s not what this workshop asks of you.

You don’t have to leave your relationship.

You don’t have to confront anyone.

You don’t have to set a boundary that day.

You don’t have to decide who is right or wrong.

And you don’t have to make yourself responsible for another person’s behavior.

You don’t have to change everything today.

You don’t have to change anything at all.

The purpose of this workshop is to help you see more clearly.

Because awareness can help you recognize choices.

And recognizing a choice doesn’t create an obligation to make it.

Your choices are still yours.

What will you walk away with?

By the end of our time together, my hope is that you can say:

“I can see my situation more clearly, and now I can see options I couldn’t see before.”

During the workshop, you’ll have an opportunity to:

Recognize a repeating pattern.
Identify a relationship situation or experience that seems to keep happening.

See the dynamic more clearly.
Slow down one specific situation and look at what the other person does, how you respond, and what tends to happen next.

Separate observation from interpretation.
Begin noticing the difference between what actually happened and what you believe it means.

Understand what belongs to whom.
Separate another person’s behavior and choices from your own without assigning fault or blame.

Recognize where your choices live.
See more clearly what you can control—and what you can’t.

Understand boundaries differently.
Learn the difference between wanting someone to change, trying to control another person’s behavior, and deciding what you are willing to do if something doesn’t change.

Identify possible options.
Recognize choices you may not have been able to see while you were caught inside the frustration.

Consider one small next step—if you want one.
If you decide you want something to be different, identify one manageable action you could experiment with.

And you’ll have something to take with you.

Your registration includes a guided participant workbook that you’ll use throughout the workshop.

This isn’t a worksheet you’ll complete and turn in.

It belongs to you.

You can write as much or as little as you want during the workshop, keep your reflections private, and return to the exercises later as you notice more about your relationships.

Is this workshop for you?

Why Do I Keep Doing That? was created primarily for women who feel frustrated, unhappy, confused, or stuck in a relationship and find themselves wondering why things keep turning out this way.

This workshop may be helpful for you if...

  • You want to feel seen, loved, and respected—but often don’t.

  • You keep having versions of the same conversation or argument without really resolving the issue.

  • You’ve asked for what you need, but you’re still waiting for something to change.

  • You sometimes stay quiet or give in because you’re afraid of conflict or afraid of losing the relationship.

  • You find yourself focused on what the other person needs to do differently before things can get better.

  • You’ve said you were going to respond differently next time...and then found yourself responding in the same familiar way.

  • You’re not necessarily ready to make a big change—you just want to understand what’s happening more clearly.

Or maybe you simply keep coming back to the same question:

“Why does it always turn out this way?”

We’ll focus primarily on romantic relationships.

But relationships are relationships.

As you begin recognizing patterns, you may discover that some of the same dynamics also appear with family members, friends, coworkers, or other people in your life.

The goal isn’t to put a label on your relationship.

It’s to help you see what’s happening more clearly.

Your story can stay private.

This is a live, interactive workshop—but participation does not mean you have to share the details of your relationship.

Throughout our time together, you’ll have opportunities to reflect privately in your workbook.

When I invite participation, you can:

Share a thought in the Zoom chat.

Raise your hand if you’d like to speak.

Listen without sharing at all.

All of those are ways to participate.

You don’t owe the group your personal story in order to benefit from the workshop.

I’ll also encourage you to choose a manageable relationship situation for the exercises rather than the most painful or emotionally charged experience you’ve had.

We’re learning a way to look at relationship patterns more clearly.

You get to decide how much of your own experience you want to explore—and how much of it you want to share.

Why Do I Keep Doing That? is an educational and self-reflection workshop, not therapy or couples counseling.

We won’t be diagnosing you, your partner, or your relationship. And we won’t be deciding who is right, who is wrong, who should stay, or who should leave.

This workshop is also not designed to assess or address abuse, violence, coercion, or immediate safety concerns. Those situations deserve appropriate individualized support rather than being explored as examples of how someone participates in a relationship dynamic.

Meet Your Facilitator

Delsa Johnson-Waddell, PhD

I’ve spent much of my professional life studying human behavior and helping people better understand themselves and their experiences.

I earned a PhD in psychology with an emphasis in industrial/organizational psychology, and I have been a licensed therapist since 2010, with several years of experience specializing in trauma treatment.

That background has taught me something I believe deeply:

Understanding ourselves doesn’t require blame or shame.

We can become curious about what’s happening, recognize patterns we may not have seen before, and explore the choices available to us—without deciding that someone has to be the bad guy.

That’s the spirit I bring to Why Do I Keep Doing That?

During this workshop, I’m not serving as your counselor or therapist. I’m your educator and facilitator, guiding you through a structured process that can help you step outside the frustration for a little while and look at your situation more clearly.

My goal isn’t to tell you what you should do.

It’s to help create a safe place for you to see more clearly, understand more, and recognize where your own choices may exist.

Maybe the first step is simply seeing more clearly.
